Steve Reich’s Clapping Music adapted for electric guitar cables and two-channel video. Clapping Music sets two percussionists clapping out a pattern found in West African drumming. One repeats the pattern throughout, while the second periodically shifts the pattern over by one pulse, eventually coming around to end in unison. Instead of hand claps, this version sets the rhythm on the 60Hz hum caused by touching the ends of cables plugged into a recording preamp. The audio and video follow the form of the music by slowly panning the two channels apart and back together as the patterns phase rhythmically out of and back into sync. Best viewed with stereo audio output.
