Charmaine (2005)
This collage is made up of a random collection of songs, all of which happen
to contain fragments of the lyrics to the 1920's song Charmaine by Erno Rapee and Lew Pollack.
As well as following the lyrical structure, the piece follows a typical jazz standard form of exposition,
instrumental interlude and reprise; the random keys and tempos of the various songs create a
bumpy ride with some polytonal twists and harmonic coincidences.
Made in response to Charmaine Wheatley and Taketo Shimada's performance piece in which
Shimada mixed multiple recorded versions of the song.
